Kuchh Aur at Couture (Week)

FORTY YEARS of Ritu Kumar's work shown over what seemed like a never ending ramp walk by India's top models, left one feeling bored out of their skulls.

I'm talking about the "grand start" to the Couture Fashion Week in Mumbai that kicked-off with a retrospective of Ritu Kumar's fashion over the last forty years. All the bling in the embroidery failed to add dazzle to the show which featured a never ending display of ghagras, sarees and gowns.

However, some of the sarees (worn with hand embroidered jackets), the jacet dresses and some fantastic bags were what made us sit up and take notice. But the gowns were far from "red carpet" and easily looked like something you'd find at your neighborhood "byootik".

Maybe the saving grace of the show was the guest appearances on the ramp by stars like Priyanka Chopra, Neha Dhupia (who has put on quite a bit of weight), the super gorgeous Riya Sen and her lovely sister Raima Sen.

But even these Bollywood hotties did not compare to former models like Anna Bredmeyer and Shyamolie Varma, who added a significant sparkle to an otherwise trite showing.

Expectedly, the front row had a number of "celebs" taking up pride of place. Among them were Shabana Azmi (in a fab red saree) with her lyricist husband Jaaved Akhtar, former actress Moon Moon Sen (looking hotter than all those so-called divas on the ramp)and Karan Johar - who dressed like Michael Jackson, almost!

So what is a retrospective then? From what I could tell, it's only about showing off the garments that didn't sell over the past forty years.
